Communications are one of the things most defining modern society. People are continuously interconnected and exchanging valuable, important information. As a business, your phone system, or "PBX," is the key to keeping communications flowing, ensuring salespeople and clients alike are able exchange information. Before diving in though, there are a few things you should consider.
Make sure you consider some questions: How much expansion would you expect to have, and how long should the system continue to serve you? Would you gain more from maintaining it at your office, or having a third party host it? Will you need to have your system control several physical locations, and maybe forward calls to other remote locations?
Answering some of these questions is crucial to finding the best fit for your business, and its PBX. Let's consider an example of a key feature option that could add a lot to your company's phone system, and far too often ignored.
You might need to see if you have space for the unit you're considering. The central core of a business phone system can vary in size from that of a small rackmount computer, all the way up through the size of a refrigerator. A dazzling array of features is no small comfort if you fail to account for the amount of space the unit will take up, especially if you have a small office.
Not only that, but installation is a sobering topic. Many business phone systems will take special proprietary connections and wiring, extended networking, or wholly gutting your existing phone system to make way for the new. Others may be able to use a standard phone system, or even your basic computer network - though you may also end up sacrificing features for flexibility and convenience. Many times, the proprietary setups use their special connectors and wiring to deliver more data and extra features.
Not all the systems on the market are proprietary. Many commercial options are powered by an open source PBX package. The "Asterisk" project is a suite of high powered, feature rich software PBX tools, very popular with many businesses. The software runs on a standard PC, along with specialized interface cards to connect you to the outside phone system (including everything from standard phone lines, through ISDN or T1 lines.) Features are rich, including robo-dialing, auto-operator menu systems, voicemail, voice over IP, and much more.
However, if you go this route, you'll either need to administer all of this yourself, or hire an expert to setup and administer the system for you. With the full features of the suit, also comes the process of installing it.
The sheer power and flexibility delivered by computer driven phone systems, like the modern business PBX, can do wonders for your business. But each business has unique needs and demands, and there is really no one size fits all solution. The considerations mentioned here should help you determine what will really benefit you in a business phone system.
