Regardless if you're a small business just entering your market, or a large business upgrading your business phone system to meet growing needs, the market has really expanded to meet today's demand for constant communication and collaboration.
While evaluating phone systems for business environment, it's important to consider expandability and functionality for future years. Getting locked in to a reduced capability business phone setup which won't scale with your increasing needs. Consider several of the features that a modern business phone system would bring you, keeping an eye towards the long run.
Power outages happen occasionally. It is a little ironic to be thinking of cutting edge business phone systems, and realize that it's going to be driven by a power network that largely runs on a power grid designed for the needs of the last century. Fortunately many modern-day PBX telephone systems come complete with their own built-in battery systems, a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to avoid this from leaving your organization dead in the water, should the power fails. Even in the event of a blackout, your clients and employees will still be able to count on communications going unimpeded, and the hub of your communications will remain functional, taking calls as usual.
A unique option in the market is the "Hosted PBX." Rather than running the system yourself, a hosted PBX is a run remotely, usually leased on a monthly or yearly basis. The advantage is largely that you can take a hands off approach to the system, and have little investment in equipment. Calls can easily be routed to other numbers as well, such as cells and home phones. The advantages do come at a price though, with much of your system being tied up remotely, which can become a nightmare should you later switch to a local system. Transferring everything from menus to voicemail to extensions to the new system can become difficult.
The sheer power delivered by computer driven phone systems, like the modern business PBX, can do wonders for your business. But each business has unique needs and demands, and there is really no one size fits all solution. It's my hope that some of the information above will help you determine the best system for your growing business.
