People are constantly interconnected and exchanging valuable, important information. As a business, your phone system, or "PBX," is the key to keeping communications flowing, making sure sales agents and clients as well are able exchange information. Before diving in though, there are a few things you should consider.
In a small business, it's important to don't get locked into a small PBX system which could stagnate after some time can leave you in the position of having to pay for more in the end, upgrading an existing system - or maybe that's precisely the situation you are at right now. Have a look at some of the features that a modern business phone system would bring you, keeping an eye towards the longer term.
Power outages happen regularly. It is a little odd to be looking at leading edge business phone systems, and realise that it's going to be driven by a power supply from a power grid engineered to the needs of the previous century. And worse, a modern computerized system can be brought to its knees by a power outage. Fortunately many modern-day PBX telephone systems come complete with their own integrated UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to avoid this from leaving your business dead in the water, should the power fails. Even in the event of a blackout, your clients and employees will still be able to count on communications going unimpeded, and the hub of your communications will remain functional, taking calls as usual.
Not all the systems on the market are proprietary. Many commercial options are powered by an open source PBX package. The "Asterisk" project is a suite of high powered, feature rich software PBX tools, very popular with many businesses. The software runs on a standard PC, along with specialized interface cards to connect you to the outside phone system (including everything from standard phone lines, through ISDN or T1 lines.) Features are rich, including robo-dialing, auto-operator menu systems, voicemail, voice over IP, and much more.
However, if you go this route, you'll either need to administer all of this yourself, or hire an expert to setup and administer the system for you. The software can be difficult to install and configure without experience, requiring a good deal of time to familiarize yourself with it.
No one can predict the future, or determine how their business will change and expand in the coming years. One thing is certain though, your choice of business phone system will be one of the crucial factors in shaping those coming years of expansion. The PBX forms the nervous system, the core of all your business dealings. Without choosing a powerful and business phone system though, that nervous system is left lacking, and your business crippled. Power and expandability are critical in finding the PBX that's the right fit for you.
