As a result of communications needs in these modern times, it's difficult to stay current, as well as in touch with your potential clients. Communication is the key to productivity, as well as the most basic link in communication is your business telephone system. What you're looking for is a "Private Branch Exchange," or PBX. In the world of telephony, these advanced systems are what keeps communications open between employees, offices, and the outside world.
For the most part , home telephone systems are straightforward to choose, with almost no options and a few vendors to decide upon. That's no big surprise, for individual usage, there is not really a lot of wide variety regarding needed functions or hi-tech capabilities.
Like with everything else, the corporate world moves at a different rate. Features can make or break your office telephone system, influencing your ability to scale with potential future requirements and business expansion, your means to make use of the power of the internet as part of your communications network (with technologies such as Voip,) and your ability to remain bulletproof and protected from services outages, with things such as battery back-up UPS systems as well as remote management functionality. With your PBX being so important, let's take a look at a thing or two that you might need to keep in mind.
Cabinet space and installation requirements are far too often overlooked. A business PBX can vary in size from that of a small rackmount computer, all the way up through the size of a refrigerator. A dazzling array of features is no small comfort if you fail to account for the amount of space the unit will take up, especially if space is a consideration.
Not only that, but installation is a sobering topic. Many business phone systems will take special proprietary setups, extended networking, or wholly gutting your existing phone system to make way for the new. Some can use a standard telephone system already in place, or even your basic computer network - though you may also end up sacrificing features for flexibility and convenience. Many times, the proprietary setups use their special connectors and wiring to deliver more data and extra features.
Not all the systems on the market are proprietary. Many commercial options are powered by an open source PBX package. The "Asterisk" project is a suite of high powered, feature rich software PBX tools, very popular with many businesses. The software runs on a standard PC, along with specialized interface cards to connect you to the outside telephone system (including everything from standard telephone lines, through ISDN or T1 lines.) Features are rich, including robo-dialing, auto-operator menu systems, voicemail, voice over IP, and much more.
Of course this doesn't come without downsides. You'll either need to administer all of this yourself, or hire an expert to setup and administer the system for you. The software can be difficult to install and configure without experience, requiring a good deal of time to familiarize yourself with it.
"Can you hear me now?" isn't something you want your customers or employees to have to utter. Making sure you're prepared to deal with any communications needs that may crop up is serious demand of modern business. Your selection of a business telephone system will ensure that you're not only able to keep voice communications flowing, but will also allow seamless integration with other modern technology, keeping your business agile and responsive to the market's demands.
