Small businesses must frequently maintain contact with their clients, and staff.People are constantly interconnected and being involved in those connections is crucial to keeping vital in today's economy. As a business, your phone system, or "PBX," is the key to keeping communications flowing, making sure employees and clients as well are able exchange information. Before diving in though, there are a few things you should consider.

The way you start buying and integrating a PBX in to your company will depend mostly on what sort of functions and services it offers, in addition to how you want to use it. How much bandwidth for internet connectivity does your PBX need to have? Will you need to have your system control several physical locations, and possibly forward telephone calls to cell phones or other remote locations?

Addressing some of these questions is very important to getting the most from the system. Let's consider an example of a key feature choice which can add a lot to your company's phone system, and way too often overlooked.

You might need to see if you have space for the unit you're considering. The central core of a business phone system can vary in size from tiny units stashed on a shelf through huge ones demanding their own closet. A dazzling array of features is no small comfort if you fail to account for the amount of space the unit will take up, especially if you have a small office.

You'll also need to take into consideration what your current infrastructure is, in regard to telephony. Many powerful PBX systems take special proprietary connections and wiring, extended networking, and more. Others may be able to use a standard phone system already in place, or even your basic computer network - though you may also end up sacrificing features for flexibility and convenience. Many times, the proprietary setups use their special connectors and wiring to deliver more data and extra features.

Not all the systems on the market are proprietary. Many commercial options are powered by an open source PBX package. The "Asterisk" project is a suite of high powered, feature rich software PBX tools, very popular with many businesses. The software runs on a standard PC, along with specialized interface cards to connect you to the outside phone system (including everything from standard phone lines, through ISDN or T1 lines.) Features are rich, including robo-dialing, auto-operator menu systems, voicemail, voice over IP, and much more.

Of course this doesn't come without downsides. You'll either need to administer all of this yourself, or hire an expert to setup and administer the system for you. The software can be difficult to install and configure without experience, requiring a good deal of time to familiarize yourself with it.

We've come a long way since the days of the early telephone and switchboard. The sheer power delivered by computer driven phone systems, like the modern business PBX, can do wonders for your business. But each business has unique needs and demands, and there is really no one size fits all solution. It's my hope that some of the information above will help you determine what will really benefit you in a business phone system.
