In a world of ever changing technologies and advancing marketing and sales communications needs, it's difficult to stay current, and in touch with your customers. Communication is paramount to productivity, as well as the most basic link in communication is your business telephone system. What you're looking for is a "Private Branch Exchange," or PBX. In the world of telephony, these advanced systems are the foundation of it all. It can be difficult to determine exactly what sort of PBX you need, though.
While evaluating telephone systems for large business environment, it's essential that you give some thought to expandability and functionality for the future. Getting locked into a poor capability business telephone setup which could stagnate after a while might possibly leave you in the position of having to spend more over time, modernizing an existing service - or possibly that is exactly the situation you are at at this time. Why don't we look into a couple of things you need to give consideration to.
Cabinet space and installation requirements are far too often overlooked. A business PBX can vary in size from that of a small rackmount computer, all the way up through the size of a refrigerator. A dazzling array of features is no small comfort if you fail to account for the amount of space the unit will take up, especially if space is a consideration.
You'll also need to take into consideration what your current infrastructure is, in regard to telephony. Many powerful PBX systems take special proprietary connections and wiring, extended networking, or wholly gutting your existing phone system to make way for the new. Others may be able to use a standard telephone system, or even your basic computer network - though you may also end up sacrificing features for flexibility and convenience. Many times, the proprietary setups use their special connectors and wiring to deliver more data and extra features.
Not all the systems on the market are proprietary. Many commercial options are powered by an open source PBX package. The "Asterisk" project is a suite of high powered, feature rich software PBX tools, very popular with many businesses. The software runs on a standard PC, along with specialized interface cards to connect you to the outside telephone system (including everything from standard telephone lines, through ISDN or T1 lines.) Features are rich, including robo-dialing, auto-operator menu systems, voicemail, voice over IP, and much more.
Of course this doesn't come without downsides. You'll either need to administer all of this yourself, or hire an expert to setup and administer the system for you. With the full features of the suit, also comes a sometimes difficult and time consuming process of installing it.
We've come a long way since the days of the early telephone and switchboard. The sheer power delivered by computer driven telephone systems, like the modern business PBX, can do wonders for your business. After reviewing some of these potential offerings, no doubt you can see how wide reaching these benefits can be. It's my hope that some of the information above will help you determine what will really benefit you in a business phone system.
