As a result of communications needs these days, it's important for your business to stay on top. Telecommunications is paramount to productivity, and the most basic link in communication is your business telephone system. What you're looking for is a "Private Branch Exchange," or PBX. These powerful and technologically advanced devices are the foundation of it all.

How you would start deciding on and integrating a PBX in to your business will be based on largely on what sort of capabilities and services it gives you, in addition to how you plan to host it. What amount growth do you expect to have, and how long should the system continue to serve you? What type of infrastructure do you have in place currently, plus can you utilize it in the new system?

Answering some of these questions is very important to getting the most from the system. Let's look at an example of a key feature option which could add a lot to your business's telephone system, and far too often neglected.

Power failures happen occasionally. It's somewhat odd to be considering leading edge business telephone systems, and understand that it is going to be driven by a power supply from a power grid designed for the requirements of the last century. Luckily many modern-day PBX systems come complete with their own integrated battery systems, a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to prevent this from stopping your phone calls. Even in the event of a blackout, your clients and employees will still be able to count on communications going unimpeded, and the hub of your communications will remain functional, taking calls as usual.

Not all the systems on the market are proprietary. Many commercial options are powered by an open source PBX package. The "Asterisk" project is a suite of high powered, feature rich software PBX tools, very popular with many businesses. The software runs on a standard PC, along with specialized interface cards to connect you to the outside telephone system (including everything from standard telephone lines, through ISDN or T1 lines.) Features are rich, including robo-dialing, auto-operator menu systems, voicemail, voice over IP, and much more.

Of course this doesn't come without downsides. You'll either need to administer all of this yourself, or hire an expert to setup and administer the system for you. The software can be difficult to install and configure without experience, requiring a good deal of time to familiarize yourself with it.

The sheer power and flexibility delivered by computer driven telephone systems, like the modern business PBX, can do wonders for your business. But each business has unique needs and demands, and there is really no one size fits all solution. It's my hope that some of the information above will help you determine what will really benefit you in a business phone system.
