Businesses must consistently maintain contact with their new customers, and employees.People are continuously interconnected and being involved in those connections is crucial to keeping vital in today's economy. As a business, your telephone system, or "PBX," is the key to keeping communications flowing, ensuring personnel and customers alike are able to stay in contact with one another. Before diving in though, there are a few things you should consider.
In a business, it's important to start thinking about expandability and features for the future. Getting locked into a minimal capability business telephone setup which could stagnate after some time may possibly leave you in the position of having to spend more in the long term, upgrading an existing system - or even that's exactly the point you're at at this time. Think about some of the features that a up-to-date business telephone system may bring you, keeping an eye towards the future.
Power outages happen occasionally. It's a little odd to be looking at innovative business telephone systems, and realise that it is going to be driven by a power supply from a power grid designed for the needs of the previous century. And worse, a modern computerized system can be brought to its knees by a power outage. The good news is many modern day PBX systems come complete with their own built-in battery systems, a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to avoid this from stopping your communications. Even in the event of a blackout, your clients and employees will still be able to count on communications going unimpeded, and the backbone of your business will remain functional, taking calls as usual.
Not all the systems on the market are proprietary. Many commercial options are powered by an open source PBX package. The "Asterisk" project is a suite of high powered, feature rich software PBX tools, very popular with many businesses. The software runs on a standard PC, along with specialized interface cards to connect you to the outside telephone system (including everything from standard telephone lines, through ISDN or T1 lines.) Features are rich, including robo-dialing, auto-operator menu systems, voicemail, voice over IP, and much more.
Of course this doesn't come without downsides. You'll either need to administer all of this yourself, or hire an expert to setup and administer the system for you. The software can be difficult to install and configure without experience, requiring a good deal of time to familiarize yourself with it.
No one can predict the future, or determine how their business will change and expand in the coming years. However, communications will forever be the core of any successful business. The PBX forms the nervous system, the core of all your business dealings. Without choosing a powerful and business telephone system though, that nervous system is left lacking, and your business crippled. Whatever your choice, the benefits brought by some of these new features will undoubtedly bring a serious boost to your productivity and capabilities.
